Join us to build a scarecrow for the NAMI Stand Up to Stigma contest.

What: NAMI Central Middlesex is holding its 9th annual “Stand Up To Stigma” Scarecrow Contest. DBSA Boston will be participating this year. In September, we’ll make a scarecrow to represent our group. It will be displayed during the month of October at Cucurbit Farm in Acton. Winners of the contest will be announced November 1st, 2024.

The Process: The scarecrow frame will be paid for by DBSA Boston ($25). It will be picked up from Cucurbit Farm in Acton at the beginning of September and brought to Washington Street Art Center in Somerville, where it will be covered and decorated and generally turned into something amazingly fantastic. Then it will be transported back to Acton for the contest at the beginning of October.

Where and When: Everyone is invited to come and work on the scarecrow on Sunday afternoons in September from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. ET at Rachel’s studio in the Washington Street Art Center, 321 Washington Street, Somerville, MA 02143. There’s ample, free, on-street parking (resident parking only rules are not in effect on Sundays). Scarecrow studio days are September 8, 15, 22, 29. Directions

The Event: Field Trip to Cucurbit Farm, (32 Parker Street, Acton, MA) to view the other scarecrows and play in the Corn Maze. Date TBA.

Ways to Join the Project: This community art project has lots of different parts. It would be great to have help with (1) transportation, (2) design, (3) co-hosting a Sunday afternoon at the studio, (4) applying coverings, paint, and decorations to the scarecrow, and (5) organizing a field trip to Cucurbit Farm in October.

To participate in this really fun project and/or ask questions, contact Rachel at Rachel@dbsaboston.org.
