President’s Message

May 1, 2024

Dear Friends,

Crocuses bloomed last month, but now spring has really begun in earnest. The lavender azaleas are in full bloom and the flowering trees are bursting forth.

Last month my husband, Jim, and I drove to Barre, Vermont to visit a friend from our college days. Memories of the summer of 1975, when I had just finished my freshman year of college, came back to me. I had offered to help my brother and his wife with a small dairy farm outside Hanksville, Vermont. I helped feed and milk the 50 Guernseys, and muck the stalls, as well as churn butter by hand, bake bread, make raspberry jam and help tend my young niece. I groomed a young heifer to show at the county fair.

That time nourished my soul as do the echoes into the present day.
My wise mom had suggested I offer my help after a short-lived debacle trying to sell encyclopedias door to door with a very shady company. The contrast was stunning.

Exciting news: our new website will launch in May. I want to thank everyone who has worked hard to accomplish this milestone.

On June 18, my term as president will end. The bylaws are clear: the president position can only be held for two consecutive one-year terms. Then the baton must be passed.
Elsewhere in this Polars’ Express is the list of candidates for June’s election. All DBSA Boston members, current as of June 1, 2024, will be sent a link to an electronic ballot. Please vote.
